„When he conducted his DDT studies (…) Peterson observed this characteristics for the first time in 1957 near his home (…) „When Great Island should have been a scene of [osprey] activity, with young birds at a flying stage, I scanned the marsh through my telescope. I saw the usual number of adults about – but where were the young? The nesting season had obviously been a failure. The next year confirmed my suspicions. Althrough young osprey ordinarily pip the shell in about five weeks, many adults sat on unhatched eggs for 60 to 70 days. Other eggs mysteriously disappeared. One bird brought a rubber ball to the nest and faithfully sat on it for six weeks!” (…) In august 1962, he wrote to Carl Buchheister: „I realize that we have got to fight like hell in the years to come and that we have been playing at conservation most of us. I for one am going to become a very nasty fellow as the years go on because I see the disintegration in so many ways. … We have got to be far more militant, and I am afraid that biologists as a whole have got to be a bit more aggressive from now on. The bastards who are destroying America are very aggressive as you know.”” pg. 151-152, Roger Tory Peterson – A Biography, Douglas Carlson, University of Texas Press, Austin, 2007.

„Peterson’s response was not temporized: „The obvious is not mentioned. This is the pesticides in the food chain which I would have thought by now is the only economical hypothesis and has been more or less proven by [James B.] DeWitt’s fine work. To ignore it is to be myopic and to refuse to face up to an admittedly overwhelming problem. … As an ecologist you must be aware that the birds at the ends of long food chains … would be the most vulnerable. … So many biologists say in their hyper-cautious way – ‚We need more field research.’ Is this a way of insuring their jobs? … Peter Ames who expressed much the same view about ospreys in a hypercautious way, will now, when you pin him down, admit that pesticides are the only answer. The chemicals are in the eggs in very considerable amounts. And they are in the fish brought to the nests.” Barbara Peterson echoed this sentiment in the Petersons’ 1965 New Year’s letter: „Even through many academic man and public servants alike are privately convinced that poisons are responsible for some of these disasters they are reluctant to say so publicly. Cynically, one of them commented that the price of speaking out comes too high.” And Peterson revealed his impatience with the scientific and academic community when he wrote to William Vogt: „Peter Ames, whom I know well and admire, went to his professors at Yale. … He asked to do this [an osprey/ DDT study] for his doctorate. Thay said that the project was not worth a doctorate, and after putting a few facts in the computer (but not motivation) told him that he was to work instead on the syrinxes of thrushes.”” pg. 153-154, Roger Tory Peterson – A Biography, Douglas Carlson, University of Texas Press, Austin, 2007.

“In April 1964 (…) he testified before (…) US Senate Committee on Government Operations (…) “Aldrin, endrin, dieldrin and all compounds of the chlorinated hydrocarbon complex be banned. Permits to manufacture them should be redrawn.” He began in almost the same way that Carson started her book, telling the committee members that he had heard that three hundred acres in Norfolk, Virginia, were to be sprayed with dieldrin the same night he was to speak there. He opened his remarks by saying it was good to hear mockingbirds again, then added, “You probably won’t have them next week. … Rachel Carson’s ‘Silent Spring’ was no fantasy.” (…) more than 300 dead birds were picked up the next day in Norfolk. Applying that “yardstick” to the 100 to 150 million acres that are sprayed yearly, he suggested that more than 100 million birds were killed by pesticides each year in the United States. He went on to cite Joseph Hickey’s estimate that half a million robins were killed when DDT was used on elm trees in the Midwest. But it wasn’t the songbirds, whose populations could withstand such a slaughter, that worried him; it was the birds at the top of the food pyramid, “for they take poison biologically concentrated by their prey and their prey’s prey.” He testified as a teacher rather than as a scientist, summarizing the causes and effects, explaining to the confused layman how a pesticide sprayed on a mosquito could end up threatening a hawk population: “Traces of poison ingested by little fish upriver – either in the runoff or through poisoned insects – make them easier prey for larger fish. Numbers of affected fingerlings compound their poisons in the predators, and it is the large fish that is wobbly, swimming near the surface, that is more likely to be caught by the osprey, which transfers the accumulated poison to its own tissues. Natural selection becomes unnatural selection.” He saved his hardest criticism for the Department of Agriculture, saying that it “represents a special economic interest group.” He went on to say that the department “has been almost arrogant in tending to ignore, even to scoff at, the proven damages to wildlife resources and the potential hazards to human health.” (…) DDT was banned in 1972 (…)” pg. 154-155, Roger Tory Peterson – A Biography, Douglas Carlson, University of Texas Press, Austin, 2007.

Penibil?

„Birds, as always, were the „litmus paper” of the environment for him. He pointed out that in the last three centuries seventy-six species of birds become extinct, and another two thousand were endangered. „The majority of these are extinct or rare because of man, not nature,” he warned. „if we saw ourselves as part of nature, instead of separate from it, we would have taken a giant step towards survival.” (…) Abandoning religions that „have fostered the idea of the separateness of man, the individual can arrive at a new, and hopeful, relationship with his environment. … The civilized man, the humane man, readily accepts not only the humane ethic, as we think of it, but also the conservationist’s philosopy as well as the environmentalist’s point of view. They are overlapping and interlocking. All are essential to a better and more civilzed world. It is a matter of attitudes – a reverence for life – all life.”” pg. 157-158, Roger Tory Peterson – A Biography, Douglas Carlson, University of Texas Press, Austin, 2007.
